General The dark spots that are often created on the foliage following the fall of honeydew produced by the aphids are defined as fumaggini. These spots are caused by the proliferation of microscopic mushrooms, which feed on the sugar contained in the honeydew; fumaggini are certainly harmful from an aesthetic point of view, since they smear leaves and fruits; if they proliferate excessively, they are also harmful to the whole plant, because they inhibit photosynthesis of the leaves covered by fungi.
